My work is about the material - that’s where it starts.

Hidden Light

Alabaster is around 140 million years old and it holds light in the most beautiful of ways, it literally glows from the inside. This beautiful material is mesmerising. Its ancient form takes on this translucent quality when cut thinly and lit from behind.

It is a soft stone, so is worked with traditional hammer and chisels. The marks they leave hold the energy of the making and the highly polished surfaces have an etherial quality, where the formation of the stone is visible inside. My latest work is figurative, using the narrative of the rough an broken stone, with the inner light discussing healing and rebuilding.

Strength and softness

Marble is rough and heavy in its unworked form, which gives way to a gentle, smooth matt surface as you work it. This strength and hardness, along with a look that is soft and delicate. It’s reflects light beautifully and looks like skin when carved or when exploring where light meets shadow, which is the descriptor of form.

Clay and the human form

The malleability of clay, lends itself to the description of the body. The emotional energy held within the body is delicately described by this medium. When not overworked, the clay holds the tension of movement and breath. It’s a great starting point to explore ideas and themes.
